Letter : Scottsbluff, Neb., to Winslow F. Sanderson, Fort John, Wyo., 1849 Jul 28.

ALS written by James Bordeau, to Major Winslow F. Sanderson, United States Army Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, at Fort John, later Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Bordeau briefly reports that an Indian has been killed by order of two Indian chiefs, who held the Indian responsible for the death of a white man. Bordeau requests that Sanderson send an escort to protect him and his companions from possible retribution by other Indians. Appended to the letter is a list of names of Indians in French, with English translations written in an unidentified hand. On verso of the letter is a note written by Bordeau advising that a party leaving the fort be accompanied by an escort and offering his services as an interpreter.
